Saturday night was a feast for the basketball fan as the NCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball Tournament and a highly-anticipated NBA regular season matchup took center stage.
CBS was the night’s top network in total viewers (5.79 million), adults 18-49 (1.7 rating/6.5 share) and adults 25-54 (2.0/7). The second round matchup in the South Region of “(#1) Kansas Jayhawks vs. (#9) Connecticut Huskies” on CBS was the night’s top program in total viewers, adults 18-49 (2.439 million, slightly ahead of the 2.418 million by Warriors-Spurs on ABC) and adults 25-54.
Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs on ABC’s “NBA Saturday Primetime” — the highest-ever combined win total to-date among two teams within a regular season — led ABC to win the night on Saturday across adults 18-34, males 18-34 and males 18-49, according to Nielsen.
ABC’s NBA telecast of San Antonio’s 87-79 victory over Golden State peaked with 7.101 million viewers from 10:45-11 p.m. Eastern. This is the second-most watched and second-highest rated NBA regular-season game (non-Christmas) in more than three years, since February 2013. (Only Golden State-Oklahoma City from Feb. 27, 2016 drew more total viewers).
The game drew a 22.0 local rating in San Antonio which was the highest-ever for an NBA regular season game in the market across all networks.
In the first season of the NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC franchise, the NBA on ABC is up 11 percent in viewership (4.189 million vs. 3.787 million viewers) and 9 percent in U.S. household rating (2.5 vs. 2.3), compared to last season (through 14 games).
The most-watched telecast of Saturday aired in the late afternoon on CBS: the second round NCAA tourney game in the East Region between (#4) Kentucky Wildcats vs. (#5) Indiana Hoosiers. The game drew an average of 10.486 million viewers and a 3.46 rating among adults 18-49.
