Television’s biggest day of the year was headlined by “Super Bowl 50” televised on CBS. The Denver Broncos’ 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers didn’t set the all-time average viewership record which was set with last year’s Super Bowl XLIX (114.442 million) — this year’s game off 2 percent in total viewers and off 4 percent among adults 18-49 (47.858 million vs. 49.712 million) from that Big Game — but did become the record holder in all-or-part viewership (for those who tuned into a program for at least six minutes) with 167 million.
Its Spanish-language telecast averaged 472,000 viewers on ESPN Deportes — the second most-watched non-soccer Spanish-language pay cable telecast to-date, behind the 561,000 who watched Fox Deportes’ “Super Bowl 48” on Feb. 2, 2014.
The positives for Super Bowl lead-out program “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” were that it posted its largest audience with any host in late night, its best adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 ratings in late night since Feb. 25, 1994 (post-Olympics) and its best adults 18-34 late night ratings since August 30, 1993 (series premiere). The negatives: it was down 20 percent in total viewers (20.552 million vs. 25.724 million) and down 8 percent among adults 18-49 (9.786 million vs. 10.668 million) from last year’s post-Super Bowl edition of NBC’s “The Blacklist” and to-date, became the second least-watched post-Super Bowl program in TV history (only ABC’s “Alias” in 2003 drew less).
In late night, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” averaged 4.97 million viewers, according to Nielsen preliminary data. It is the most-watched edition of “The Late Late Show” to-date since the talker launched on CBS in 1995.
