The return of “American Idol” was off and successfully running on ABC with 6.01 million viewers (#1) and a 0.9 rating/7 share in the Sunday 8-10 p.m. ET block. In today’s multi-faceted media environment, this has to be considered a definite positive.

“American Idol” followed veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (Viewers: #2, 4.86 million; A18-49: #1t, 0.6/ 5 at 7 p.m.), which like competing “60 Minutes” on CBS (Viewers: #1 for the night: 8.12 million; A18-49: #1t, 0.6/ 5) will outlive us all. And it led into crime drama “The Rookie” at 3.54 million viewers (#2) and a 0.4/ 3 in the demo (#1t) at 10 p.m.

Following aforementioned “60 Minutes” on CBS was the original block of CBS crime solvers as follows:

Sunday/CBS
8:00 p.m. “The Equalizer”
Viewers: 6.95 million (#1); A18-49: 0.5/ 4 (#2)

9:00 p.m. “NCIS: Los Angeles”
Viewers: 5.38 million (#2); A18-49: 0.5/ 3 (#2)

10:00 p.m. “S.W.A.T.”
Viewers: 3.62 million (#1); A18-49: 0.4/ 3 (#1)

Elsewhere, The CW featured an original installment of docuseries “March” (Viewers: #5, 157,000; A18-49: #5, 0.0/ 0 at 9 p.m.) out of a repeat of the first episode of drama “All American: Homecoming.” Comparably, this could very well be one of the worst performances for any program on the network. NBC was in all repeats. And Fox featured its rotation of animated Sunday 8-10 p.m. ET comedies as follows:

Viewers: 1.39 million (#3); A18-49: 0.4/ 3 (#3)

Needless to say, Fox may want to consider another Sunday night programming strategy at this point.
