The CW Passes on ‘Arrow’ Spinoff ‘Green Arrow and the Canaries’

Proposed Series Was Introduced in a Backdoor Pilot on 'Arrow'

The CW has opted not to move forward on proposed “Arrow” spinoff series “Green Arrow and the Canaries.” The second-to-last episode of “Arrow” last January, aptly titled “Green Arrow and the Canaries,” served as a backdoor pilot. Set in the future following Oliver Queen’s death, the episode followed Mia Queen (Katherine McNamara), the daughter of Oliver and Felicity Smoak, as she donned the mantle of Green Arrow and teamed with a time-displaced Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) and a similarly out-of-time Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy Rodgers) to protect the Star City of 2040 from newly-rising threats. The episode ended on a cliffhanger, with Mia’s half-brother, William (Ben Lewis) kidnapped, and her fiancee, J.J. Diggle (Charlie Barnett), having been approached by a mysterious figure who helps him regain the pre-Crisis memories of his villainous turn.

The other outstanding CW planted spinoff, “THe 100” prequel, which aired also as a backdoor pilot in the drama’s final season, remains in contention.
